Resources for Tree Farmers

The Funks - Idaho

2011 National Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year, Steve and Janet Funk, have a 369 acre Tree Farm in Idaho.  What began as a dream to live near the woods and streams in the West has turned into a model of sustainable forest management in the West.

Steve and Janet Funk share the following advice:

• Include all generations in your family in woodland activities.• Use all the opportunities for forestry-related classes and tools from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Extension, American Tree Farm System®, your state department of lands, etc.

• Walk in your wood often (and carry your pruning saw).

• Keep a watchful eye for detrimental weeds, insects, and disease–and take timely action to mitigate.

• Use a professional forestry consultant–they are a fresh set of eyes.

• Share the passion. Host events such as an Arbor Day planting, a school forest science day, senior citizen field days, or invite your neighbors and friends for awalk in the woods.

• Leave some “snags” for wildlife habitat.

• Provide space for forage and cover for large game animals.

• Keep a record of your forestry-related activities on your management plan–a handwritten note works just fine.

• Enjoy your woods and feel the spirit soar within you!
